Over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone(dosomething.org). Most jobs in America now require applicants to have a minimum of a high school diploma. In an interview with Jeremiah Byrd, Larry Miller, a journalist for Philadelphia Tribune, Byrd stated that even though he was in the process of getting his GED, while applying for a position with McDonald's, they required that an applicant either be in high school or have a minimum of a high school diploma to be considered for a job (New America Media). I feel as though these citizens should have the opportunity to go back to school for free and obtain assistance in receiving a college degree. Most states have set the age limit to return to high school for a high school diploma at ages 19-22 (Civic Enterprises 2012). Citizens who are within the age range to return should have assistance in adjusting to returning to school and access to resources that would help them achieve high grades. the citizens who have maxed out the age limit should have the opportunity to receive assistance in getting their GED, then continuing on to receiving a college a degree. in the process of going to school, they should look for a form of employment that accepts a GED, such as working on campus or paid internship for their major. They would then have a higher chance at getting a job interview. They would also have some type of education to build their
