All my life I have been told to thank God for the things I have. Ever since I was a child, I would work to earn my money and buy things I wanted myself because I knew my family didn’t have enough money. That made me wish that my family was a little richer; that we had better things. Then I learned that there are people in the world who have nothing. There are people who are homeless and who have nothing but the clothes on their back. Homelessness is a big social problem around the world, but the focus of this paper is about the problem in Spartanburg South Carolina. These people are only half right. Many people do become homeless because they are substance abusers, but others become homeless because of forces they could not control, like money problems or natural disasters. Roughly 38 percent of homeless people in the world feel like they have to rely on alcohol and 26 percent use other drugs after they become homeless to make the situation somewhat better (3). Out of 25 top cities in America, 12 percent state that one of the top three causes of homelessness in their area is due to substance abuse. One of the top reasons why substance abuse leads people to homelessness is the lack of health insurance. Without health insurance people can’t get the help they need to get rid of the addiction. People who insolvent need more support and help for their substance abuse because they do not have the resources most people have and people with stable homes and lives are least likely to go into relapse (3). Other contributions to homelessness include money problems, natural disasters, deaths in a family, one or both parents getting fired, and even mental illnesses (5). People with mental disabilities may have a harder time getting out of homelessness than others. If someone has a severe mental illness they may not be able to get any place to hire them and without a job they won’t have any money coming in to pay bills (4). Lack of an education leads to the same problem as people with mental illness. Without a proper education, you can’t get a proper job to earn money from (4). People may also have been victims of a natural disaster such as a flood, earthquake, tornado, or fire. These people may be in a financial situation where they can’t afford repairs to their house (5).
