According to Ali Meyer, from CNS news, “One in Five millennials (ages 18-34) are living in poverty, and are homeless.” That’s 13.5 million young adults living in poverty and out on the streets today, compared to 8.4 million in the 1980s. She goes on to talk about how in 2013 65% of millennials were unemployed, the lowest level recorded in the dataset (Meyer).Young children are also affected by this epidemic. Families can no longer support themselves off of minimum wage because there is such a huge gap between living cost, and the cost to support a family. The gap between minimum wage and the expenses for living arrangements are getting higher and higher. According to Tanvi Misra From, “The Atlantic City Lab”, “There is no single county in America where a minimum wage earner can support a family”(Misra). I plan to own a small, local restaurant when I’m older, and plan to only hire homeless people to work as my staff. Not only that, but I would want to set up something where everyday people could come into my restaurant and when they bought their meal, they would have the option to pay an extra amount, such as $3 and would receive this sticker. The people would then write something encouraging on the sticker and stick it to the wall. This wall could completely change someone 's day because that sticker is a ticket to a free meal. So for example, if a homeless man walked in, they could grab one of the stickers off the wall, bring it to the front and receive a free burger or a free slice of pizza, or something along those lines. I’ve heard of a couple other food places doing this, and I absolutely fell in love with the idea. Many people won’t donate money directly to homeless people in fear they would spend it on drugs or alcohol, but if we did it this way, and donated in a local public space, many more people would be willing to donate their money for someone to have a hot meal and not go hungry. I hope that whenever I start my business, that many other businesses will look at my restaurant as an example and follow in my footsteps. Together, as a whole we could significantly drop the rates of
