Create Change Esther Dyson once said, “Change Means That What Was Before Wasn’t Perfect People Want Things To Be Better”. Even if one person creates changes in his or her society at a global, national, or community level in a positive way, will make this world a better place. Each individual can create changes in his or her society, unless he/she feels that it is important to society, that an action must be needed and the action that they going to propose in order for changes to happen. The changes that I want it to happen are; to have free schooling for students from kindergarten to twelve grade all over the world, along with women’s right to an education, offer free health care and helping homeless…

If someone were to see Judson Bliss, the Director of Homeless Programs at St. Patrick Center in downtown St. Louis, at work, they might notice the water bottle he often carries around with him. Wrapped around Bliss’ water bottle is a simple bracelet that conveys much deeper meaning about the work that he does, and a large-scale issue in American society: homelessness. The bracelet Bliss’ son, an Affton High School student, gave to him, was a fundraising bracelet for the son’s math teacher whose child was afflicted by a form of cancer. The fundraiser was created by a homeless student. Yes, a homeless student.…

Introduction I’ll never forgot the plaque hanging in my childhood home with a famous Muhammad Ali quote that states, “service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” My parents, Michael and Karen Clavin, specifically placed this sign on the wall of our entrance hall so that it was visible soon as soon as we entered our home. They raised my three brothers and me to always take the opportunity to help others who were in need through service work. In the year 2007, we began volunteering at Nashville’s Room in the Inn every Thursday as a family.…

One of the first things I noticed as I walked past the famous San Francisco cable cars was his sign. “It’s tradition to tip San Francisco’s street performers because they actually do shit crap to earn money, rather than begging for nothing!” He was sitting on a white rice bucket with a harmonica pressed firmly between his lips, howling out a random assortment of notes. He would occasionally interject with his version of the blues. His lyrics immediately caused us to erupt into a fit of laughter.…

In today’s society, not many people will take a second glance when they see a homeless person. They may give a homeless person some spare change when asked for it, but not many people go the extra mile for a complete stranger living on the streets. My family is friends with a couple, the Harper’s, and the Harper’s were nice enough to take in a stranger off the streets. They had never met this woman in their lives, and yet they were kind enough to bring her in and let her live with them. I believe that is out of the societal norm because very rarely do people ever care enough to bring in a homeless person and care for them the way that the Harper’s did for that woman.…

Homelessness in Austin is on the rise. In fact, the homeless population in Austin has increased by 20% in the last year. That means more and more people you have to deal with asking you for money. Too often these people suffering from systemic poverty ask us for help and I say, enough. I’m tired of their excuses that they have families, mental health issues, or any other common and understandable reason for being homeless.…
