Homeless Man Is Thanksgivingness

Decent Essays
What, to the homeless man, is Thanksgiving? I answer: a holiday that reminds him, more than any other hungry day in the year, the gluttony and selfishness to which he is the constant prey. To him, your feasts are ridiculous; your thankful humility, just empty words; your giving attitude, bitterly ironic; your television specials, a mockery of his suffering; your holiday spirit, vanishing in an instant; your clamoring for generosity and kindness, painful to his ears; your pumpkins and autumn leaves, your peace and togetherness, with all the Macy’s Parades and cranberry sauce, are, to him mere frivolity, excess, wastefulness, greed, and close-fisted behavior- a tablecloth thrown over miserly deeds which would shock a room full of businessmen.

How many of you saw a homeless person on the way to this event? How many of you saw a man with an unshaven face rubbing his hands together for warmth sitting alone in the abyss of humans on the streets of Chicago? How many of you went shopping for presents and passed people who wouldn’t receive any gifts for Christmas this year, never mind a nice dinner or even the warmth of a fireplace? That terrible truth is that we’ve all done it. We are all guilty of passing a homeless person and thinking nothing of it.…

My interpretation of homelessness is, homelessness is a problem faced by people who lack a secure and affordable place over their head. Throughout the sessions I gradually learnt more about people suffering due to homelessness and what they did on a day to day basis. We read the poem ‘Hungerford Bridge’ - written by Katie Campbell, to help us understand the stereotypes that are used against homeless people and how the stereotypes contribute to the attitude towards the homeless society. In one session we had to explore the higher class people 's attitude towards the homelessness people.…

It is common to walk down the street in New York City and find many Americans living in poverty, wondering how they will survive through the cold winter or how they will find their next meal. Living in severe poverty has an effect on bystanders due to stereotypes that cannot be accommodated or changed. Barbara Lazear Ascher and Lars Eighner write about poverty in their essays, “On Compassion” and “On Dumpster Diving.” Barbara Lazear Ascher focuses on the difference in interactions with certain people and Lars Eighner focuses on opportunities and convenience. With the help of relating to social classes and life lessons, the authors reveal messages about misfortune.…

Every day, volunteers and staff prepare a warm meal for the homeless. In her article, Lauren Mascarenhas stated “The organization aims to set aside blame and judgment as they aid the homeless” (Mascarenhas). This view of the homeless is very humble. When the staff is helping them out, they do not see them as people who sleep on the street everyday, in contrary they see past that and they treat them as if they were from a higher class.…

Why can society spend countless, pointless dollars on meaningless objects, but cringe thinking about donating a dollar to someone in need? By definition from the McKinney Act of 1987, a homeless person is one who does not have a fixed residence to sleep at or who has a fixed residence that is a supervised shelter (Homeless Needs para 1). One of the first things I noticed as I walked past the famous San Francisco cable cars was his sign. “It’s tradition to tip San Francisco’s street performers because they actually do shit crap to earn money, rather than begging for nothing!” He was sitting on a white rice bucket with a harmonica pressed firmly between his lips, howling out a random assortment of notes. He would occasionally interject with his version of the blues. His lyrics immediately caused us to erupt into a fit of laughter.…
