Small Groups, Big Impact Have you ever felt like the odds were against you? Like there were no hopes in fixing a global issue because you were only one person? From the essay “How to Melt the Arctic,” written by John Bocknek, he says, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” The author enforces that no matter the problem, a person or a group of people can change a global issue. All human beings have a purpose in this life; some discover it while they are young, whereas others find it during later in their life. Xiuhtezcatl Martínez, the author of the environmental movement guide, called We Rise, found his purpose at an earlier age. From six years of age, the author expresses that he saw that adults had damaged the world in which he was living, and thanks to this he found his desire, his voice and motivation to want to make a difference. He found his purpose when he "saw the despair in the planet I love" (citation). Martínez uses his personal history, through pathos and ethos, to spread awareness of human actions towards the planet and to provoke and stimulate in them the desire to make a difference.…

Prompt 15 Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi once said “You must be the change you want to see in the world. If I could change something in the world, it would be pollution. I would start off in my small town by pushing forward a recycling system, using technology in place of paper and pencil, and a community trash pick up. One thing I would do is put forward the idea of a recycling program. Recycling is a benefit to both the environment and humans.…

In a way, we all change the world in a way, either a big or small way. I would change the world by being a traveling labor and delivery nurse. To me, traveling nurses help many people; the sick babies and pregnant or recovering mothers.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
