As an increasingly active member in this service organization, I collaborated with students from five other high schools to put on Holiday of Hope, an event in which club members assemble care packages and deliver them directly to the homeless of Downtown San Jose.

As a sophomore, I was in the committee that organized the event, and we wanted the packages to be as helpful as possible. With a cold winter rolling in, we did this by organizing a holiday drive, specifically

My group, consisting of Deja Calvin, Jasmine Begley, Raphael Genato, Marina Thacker, Courtney Carr, Ralph Tamakloe, and Glory Chuma, plans to organize a clothes drive through the school. The clothes we collect will go to a homeless shelter for use during the winter months. The purpose of the drive is to directly help the homeless population in Virginia Beach when help is most needed. Before the idea was formed, I knew that Goodwill takes donations for the less fortunate. Also, in our school National Honor Society has a can food drive early in the school year, and NJROTC holds a toy drive near Christmas.…

Project For our GVNSA community service project my class wanted to reach a pediatric population that was often in dire need of care and services. We put our heads together and decided that the population that was speaking to our hearts were the foster children of the Des Moines area. Foster children often get taken out of their homes and must move quickly with only a few supplies. The focus of the project was creating ‘go packs’ for these children or quick overnight bags that they could take with them in a hurry. The ‘go packs’ contained necessary supplies such as, toothbrushes, clothes, small toys, blankets, and pamphlets about vaccinations.…

The “We Care We Share” service initiative was conceived in the spring of 2012, in a youth group meeting between several of my friends and I. We meet once a month to prepare hot food, often pasta or chili, and travel to homeless shelters in the city to serve the needy. In late November, we make winter care packages and distribute them to the homeless, providing them with supplies that would help them bear the cold, such as scarves and gloves. Being one of the founding members of this initiative, I have been involved in all aspects, from its conception to actually serving the food. I was originally responsible for creating rotation lists, determining who would purchase the ingredients, who would cook, and who would serve.…

The homeless population can range from 250,000 to 3.5 million on any given night in the United States (O 'Connell et al., 2010). The uninsured in this population is at an all-time high due to increasing medical costs and programs such as Medicaid that are not available to most of this population (Zerger, Doblin, & Thompson, 2009). The homeless, indigent population are then unable to access medical care and medications without health insurance. Discharge planning in the indigent, homeless population is one of the biggest challenges that a hospital can face.…

Since I first moved out to Tempe from last fall 2014 there was an issue that i've been noticing every time I go out on a weekend to Mill Avenue with my friends. Homeless people are scattered all around the area, ones who ask for money, others who ask for weed, and the rest of them who are just there to sleep. This problem is worldwide, but I think it's mandatory to try and decrease it, especially because it's a college town in Tempe,Arizona. There is not much done these days to help with affordable housing for everyone, but it's going to keep increasing if nothing is done. I think the main reason why homeless people gather up at Mill Avenue is because they try to hunt for money from students.…

As individuals we consist of only small components of a bigger picture; however, we all have the capability of making an immense impact. After volunteering at the Rose Parade two years ago, I was inspired to create Blankets for Hope, an organization that provides blankets to individuals without homes. Scattered across the venue’s sidewalks and under makeshift tents, were an untold amount of bodies curled up together. Shocked, I saw people walk past them as if they were a piece of the daily scenery. Blankets for Hope began when I refused to accept this sight as the norm of everyday life.…
