It opens me to a new series of questions. It truly makes me wonder how much mishaps can change one’s personality. And it is inspiring to see how so many struggles and changes can turn around and become a happy ending. Homeless Bird Reflective Essay In the story, “Homeless Bird” by Gloria Whelan, the protagonist, Koly, is a 13 year old girl, lived on a countryside in India. The story begins with a pre-arranged marriage. As the story progressed, Koly was forced to face many trials that changed her in many ways. Three traits that she had shown during the story were mournful, mischievous and lighthearted. As the story begins, Koly becomes very mournful. After all, she was in the midst of many tragedies. First, she is forced to leave her home, that she had grown up in, to marry someone she didn’t even know, and wouldn’t meet until the wedding day. The book quotes: “How could I spend the rest of my days with someone I had never seen?” (Pg. 6) Then, she eventually gets to know her husband, only to find out he is awfully sick and has high chances of death. After endless attempts to heal him, they learn it is too late. Koly watches her husband, Hari die in the holy water as she wonders what will become of her (Pg. 46-47). Koly feels happy once again as Raji and her grow close. Raji takes Koly to a river where she feels at home again. The river had dragonflies, kingfishers and herons. It reminded her of old times when she was mostly happy. The book states “ ‘It’s so quiet,’ I said. ‘It’s the first peaceful minute I’ve had since I come to the city.’” (Pg. 135). This shows that Koly is, and has always been a country girl at heart. She was never a big fan of the rush and crowds of the city, and prefers the peaceful joys of the river. It’s all good from here, as Koly and Raji grow close, and eventually decide to get married on another visit to the river. Koly was surprised because normally it is very hard for a widow to find love, but at the very end of the tale, Koly and Raji go to live on the countryside and the lighthearted feel
