Homeland Security Research Paper

Hello Everyone, I hope everyone had a good first week. I apologize for the delay on my initial post. This week we are discussing the concept of homeland security in relation to homeland defense and national security. The term homeland security and the concept of national security has been prevalent in the United States since the terrorist attacks along the East coast on September 11th, 2001. After these attacks the United States had to take a look at itself and reassess its policy over the counties defense. Since then the American people, fuel by the U.S. media, have been focusing on our nation’s security. This is at one of its highest levels since the cold war with the Russians. Homeland security is defined as a “concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks” (Goss, 2006). This process is intended to reduce America’s vulnerability to terrorism, minimize the damage that could be inflicted, and finally recover from any attacks that are successful (Noftsinger, 2007). The Homeland Security concept is spear headed by the lead organization the Office of Homeland Security. This department was directly created by executive order after the attacks on September 11 th (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2006, pg. 25). The process of homeland defense pushes to see the country secured from terrorist attacks. Homeland defense is a process that is headed by the Department of Defense (Goss, 2006). This is a more direct approach and was designed to protect critical infrastructure and all areas of the United States to include territories.
