“The Odyssey” by Homer is a myth of a man who is the main protagonist of the story. The story demonstrates the importance of home. This is revealed when Odysseus shows he is persistent and has temptation on his journey home. When he reaches obstacles he follows a method and beats them every time. His perseverance leads to him finally reaching Ithaca after twenty-years on the seas. Odysseus realizes that if he does not give up hope and he trudges through each hardship at sea he will reach his family. Odysseus’ life experience away from his family will make him think that he is never going to leave Ithaca again. “My lady goddess, here is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope---how well I know---would seem a shade before you majesty, death and old age being unknown to you, while she must die. Yet, it is true, each day I long for home, long for the sight of home” (Book 9, Lines 81-86). Calypso makes her final plea to Odysseus, begging him to stay with her and her temptation trumps all those Odysseus has seen before. She not only promises to save him from future woes, but to give him what no other human character has: “immortality.” Odysseus decides to stand up to Calypso and say all he wants is his home and wife, Penelope. Even though he admits that Calypso is more beautiful than his wife. Odysseus soon arrives at Circe’s island. After one year held in captivity, Circe demands that Odysseus and his crew sail to the Underworld to seek prophecy from the ghost of Tiresias. While visiting, “Odysseus speaks to the shade of his mother. She tells him that Penelope and Telemachus are still grieving for him and that his father, Laertes, has moved to another country, where he too, mourns his son.” Odysseus is loyal by talking to his dead mother while he was visiting the Underworld. His ghostly mother has the ability to pass the news to Telemachus and Penelope that he is frantically trying to get back home.
