National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence statistics tell us that over ten percent of hospital admissions for seniors are drug or alcohol related, as are 14 percent of emergency room visits and over 20 percent of psychiatric hospital admissions. Widowers over the age of 75 have the highest rate of alcoholism in America. With three to five million seniors over the age of 65 suffering from substance abuse, there is already a problem. However, according to the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, the problem has just started.
