Home For The Kiddies Poem

I chose to illustrate the poem Take One Home for the Kiddies by Philip Larkin through a short video. The reason I chose a video was because I wanted the viewer to be able to hear the poem being read aloud. Hearing the poem read from a male’s voice allows the poem to come to life, instead of the viewers reading the poem for themselves. Along with the poem being read aloud are pictures illustrating the language being spoken. For example, if the word horn was said, then a picture of a horn would be present in the video. I also believe that these photos bring the poem to life. It is easier to imagine the poem and the story behind it if one can hear the words and see images that correlate with it. In order to construct the video I attached a recording of the poem being read by a male’s voice. I also typed to lines of the poem on each short clip so the reader can read and hear the poem. Larkin’s poetry in known to have an ironic understatement and to use commonplace experiences. This poem provided a great example of both of those styles. The irony behind the poem is that the condition’s in the pet shop for these animals was not ideal, but neither was the situation once they were bought by children. Regardless of the situation these animals were not being treated properly and they deserved to be in their natural habitat. Also, a pet shop is a commonplace; many families take their children to a pet shop to buy one of those creatures that Larkin mentions. It is a normal everyday experience that he depicts.
