For this week’s assignment, I have been asked to evaluate two mission statements from two very different companies; Home Depot and Nike. Home Depot is a home improvement supply superstore who specialize in selling tools, construction products, and services. They employ nearly 400 thousand employees (https://corporate.homedepot.com) and have 2015 annual net sales of 9.3 billion dollars (Home Depot Inc 2015 Annual Report). They operate in all 50 states to include District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico (home depot.com). In comparison, Nike is one of the world’s biggest athletic apparel and equipment designers. We are a values-driven company, and our eight core values include the following: Excellent customer service, Taking care of our people Giving back, Doing the “right” thing, Creating shareholder value, Respect for all people, Entrepreneurial spirit, and Building strong relationships” (https://corporate.homedepot.com). After reviewing their mission statement, and comparing it to the guidelines given in the article from Entrepreneur, I feel the Home Depot captures the essence of their business’s goals and the philosophies underlying them because it captures why they are in business in the first place.
Home Depot states that they strive to provide the highest level of service, not only to their customers but also to their associates, vendors, and communities “treating them as partners” (https://corporate.homedepot.com/about/values). This value system also shows a strong commitment to their image as a business, by doing the right thing and building relationships on trust, honesty, and integrity. The Home depot listed eight core values going further into depth describing their commitment to their customers as well as their associates. Where Nike simply described their target customers as everyone with a body. Although at first I did not feel that Nike’s statement fulfilled the requirements to be a strong message about the company, or its purpose I soon realized that, their mission statement does say just as much if not more than Home
