I am a chemistry major graduating from the College of Charleston in May. My undergraduate education has trained me to operate and interpret various chemical analysis instruments (UV-Vis spectrometer, gas chromatography, NMR, FTIR) effectively. Subsequently, the subjects I studied (calculus 1-3, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, instrumental chemistry) makes me conversant in the molecular interactions that are fundamental to brewing science.

Combining my training for chemistry with my affinity for home-brewing, I interned at Holy City Brewing in Charleston and LauderAle Brewing in Florida. Both were excellent introductions to the brewing industry where I learned all about brewing, cellaring,

Growing up in a health-conscious home, I have always been interested in organic gardening, herbal remedies, and natural approaches to maintaining physical, emotional, and mental health. I want to be a naturopathic physician because I believe that the body is sacred (1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?), and I want to teach people how to heal themselves, avoid unhealthy habits, and prolong good quality of life (1 Cor 3:17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.). My convictions were strengthened after seeing how my third younger sister (9 years old at the time) battled against dermatomyositis, a rare auto-inflammatory disorder with an incidence of 5.5 cases per…

Cherie Yestrebsky did say don't base your thoughts on chemistry on your experience in high school. Yet even so I just know that what she described is something that is not interesting to me. O’Net descriptions of a Chemist is to conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for quality or process control or to develop new projects or products, for example her work of cleaning up waters of the toxins that are polluted there. Hearing her story of quitting high school and not going back to till after she had gotten married and had kids, was inspirational to hear—knowing that she had problems in her journey but continued her way and got the career that she wanted. A point that she emphasizes is try to find something that you love to do.…

Makerspaces Makerspaces allow libraries to offer their patrons innovating technology like 3D printers, sewing machines, coding, and robotics that was not previously and readily assessable. Additionally, makerspaces promote lifelong learning in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical field. For example, libraries whether public, school, or academic are increasingly embracing makerspaces. Makerspaces offer the community a place where patrons can learn through interactive classes and provide advanced technology to a wide range of demographics, especially low-income patrons and minorities. I love how makerspaces are positively impacting their local community and how they help foster a new-found interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in young kids or even adults.…

Science is a subject that I find captivating and this has fuelled my desire to delve deeper into the scientific principles that govern us. My interest has developed into a career choice, and I believe the biochemistry course encompasses topics that would provide me with the opportunity to carry out research to further my knowledge on biological processes. I’m constantly questioning how different processes work at a molecular level; whether it's a simple chemical reaction or the implication of a drug on genes. The thalidomide tragedy revolves around this, because the two enantiomers had such different effects on the body. I found this aspect fascinating and my curiosity has propelled me to undertake further exploration in other topics in order to develop my understanding of a subject.…

Reflection Paper Being completely undecided in my career path, and since I have taken all of the available chemistry classes, when the opportunity to job shadow a water operator at the Emlenton Water Treatment Plant arose, I took advantage of it. Even with my knowledge in chemistry, I went into the experience knowing only that they use chemicals, such as chlorine, to treat the water from the river. I came out of the experience with a more selective career path and a much greater knowledge and appreciation for water treatment plant operators. On my first day shadowing, I met my mentor, Bill Kalp, and toured the plant. He explained the entirety of the plant from the intake pipe in the river pulling the water up, to when it is distributed to the community.…

I was not able to all the time because my mom did not allow us to bake. She thought we would burn ourselves. In college, stress is a factor so for me I found baking. Baking relaxes me the process of doing the batter then seeing the batter sponge up with a delicious smell.…

This summer, I interned for Stonegate Mortgage Corporation’s Information Technology Department, located in Carmel, IN. During the duration of my internship I was exposed to things I had not experienced from my prior internship at Pacers Sports and Entertainment, nor from classwork at Butler University. Overall, the experience at Stonegate Mortgage has been a positive one, filled with mistakes I learned from; the primary lesson learned during the internship was that some projects may seem perfect to some people, but to others they are missing key points and you must be able to adapt to these missing key points and integrate them into the project in order for complete satisfaction from your business team. There were also a lot of things I learned…

Often, an experienced chemical engineer can qualify for many positions that are not directly related to the specific parameters of chemical engineering due to the idea that the degree itself shows an ability to learn quickly and complete complex tasks. A search on an employment website such as Indeed shows high end chemical engineering jobs may include a plant manager who supervises at the highest level a factory, or a senior research and development engineer who will use the scientific process to find cheaper, more efficient ways to produce an item, or entirely new designs and products themselves. The variety of positions available shows the dynamic nature of chemical engineering and how it can apply to many different fields. In most of these fields, there seems to be at least one thing in common, a strong ability to solve…
