Home Birth Essay

Many researchers were curious as to what the outcomes would be with planned home births with a certified professional midwife opposed to the many studies that have been conducted by researchers on planned hospital births. Many people in today’s society look at home births, as a poor idea because they believe the midwife does not know what they are doing. It does help that all the studies before this one was with a small amount of people to properly get all the data one would need to believe that home births with midwives is a good idea. Since researchers wanted to make sure others knew what could happen with someone having a home birth they decided to make the study revolve around a large population of mothers and midwives as a cohort study. About five out of the six of the 655 that were moved were moved before having the baby because of causes such as failure to process, pain, and exhaustion. Researchers found that 1.3 percent of mothers and 0.7 percent of neonates were moved to the hospital after birth at home (Daviss & Johnson, 2005). In all of this study no maternal deaths happened but there was a few child deaths. After the births about 90% of the woman wanted midwife and 10% wanted another midwife. Finally over 87% of the mom and new babies did not have to be sent to the hospital. A limitation in the study was the fact that there was not a good design to collect data that was founded to compare the death rate and the chance of getting sick. All in all when a planned birth at home happened in North America using those qualified midwifes there was data to prove that having a birth at home showed lower rates of other medical
