Holyfield Short Story

Decent Essays
Holyfield came off as the calmer fighter between the two. As the camera documented him during sneak peeks of his training process, he had little to say and meant business. At six-foot, two hundred and twenty six pounds, his style was powerful and intimidating and he wanted nothing more than to prove that he deserved his crown as the heavyweight champion of the world. For Holyfield, this was more than just a boxing match. It was a long awaited competition of two of the best fighters in the world – six years in the making.

(Ward 12). Heavyweight Champion of the world is fashioned as the ‘“the Emperor of Masculinity,’” states imitable writer Gerald Early in Ward’s biography of Johnson. (Ward18). Exceedingly important in the social construct of race, and the prevailing attitude of White supremacy, the heavyweight title exemplified to everyone that the nation was justified in its mistreatment of Blacks and other people of color. (Roberts 18).…

The movie Ali with Will Smith I believe portrayed the boxer as a person with perseverance and calculating. The fight scene with George Foreman spoke volumes about Ali’s character. In this particular scene it was clear that Ali had lost to George before and this fight was about Ali reclaiming his title as the heavy weight champion of the world. Viewers were able to see Ali’s perseverance throughout the whole movie especially when his team lacked confidence in him.…

John Jeremiah Sullivan ISSUE 194, FALL 2010 When I was twenty years old, I became a kind of apprentice to a man named Andrew Lytle, whom pretty much no one apart from his negligibly less ancient sister, Polly, had addressed except as Mister Lytle in at least a decade. She called him Brother. Or Brutha—I don’t suppose either of them had ever voiced a terminal r. His two grown daughters did call him Daddy. Certainly I never felt even the most obscure impulse to call him Andrew, or “old man,” or any other familiarism, though he frequently gave me to know it would be all right if I were to call him mon vieux.…

Radiolab Playing God with Sheri Fink First of all, it was very emotional and the wrestling with the idea and implementation of triage was thought provoking. Onto the actual structure of the piece. I enjoyed all of the background music and noises. For example, when reporter Sheri Fink described the scene of the refugees in Macedonia being stuck between the borders, the inclusion of the murmuring sounds took the story from being mere words to letting me actually “see” the scene with a sea of people aggregated in groups waiting for fate to happen. It gave me more context to visualize than just a description of the people, and this technique allowed me to live in the story longer and offer even more sympathy.…

However, it changed to the fear that he never knew what mother would do if he told the truth, but the person abusing you should not make it your fault. It is never the victim's fault because no matter what you could do, it is never an excuse for you to have to go through any type of abuse, physical or mental, but for as long as they allow it to happen, it will only get worse. If there is one major thing David’s story taught me, is that we need to be like the nurse at his school, someone that a victim knows they can trust and talk to you about, knowing they will not be judged.…
