What is a hero? A hero is classified as a number of things. A hero might be a person who in the opinion of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is considered as an exemplary model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. It began with edicts, the first law required the Jewish people register their family names and wear a yellow star to be identified easily. The second law required that all Jewish people be removed and separated from the rest of the population into small overcrowded hackneyed ghettos. During that time, the German government has established concentration camps and forced the Jewish people to leave the ghettos and abandon all of their valuables and belongings. At the concentration camps, the Jewish people witnessed loads of torture, starvation, and murder. The Jewish people were stripped out of their rights, pride, and beliefs completely, and they were forced into slave labor until disease or exhaustion killed them.
