Karl Marx, the founder of conflict theory, believed that the key to human history is class conflict (Henslin 1.7). He proposed 2 classes, bourgeoisie and the proletariat comprised the society. Bourgeoisie were the wealthy, owners, but smaller group and the proletariat were the poorer classes that worked for the bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie exploits the proletariat, in many aspects as a form of control. In the case of the Germans and the Jews, the Germans were the bourgeoisie and the Jews, proletariat. Adolf Hitler ordered the murder of thousands of Jews because he found them to be an inferior race, but also he used it to procure popular and political power. The Nazis exploited the Jews by making them work in factories, construction projects, farms or coal mines, many times walking miles to their work location. The Sonderkommando (Special Work Unit) consisted of Jewish prisoners who were selected to work in the crematoriums in camps (The Holocaust Explained). Many of prisoners were forced to kill their own parents, siblings or friends. The horror inflicted upon the Jews is greatly inexplicable. Conflict theory is based off the idea that the proletariat, or the Jews, were depended upon the bourgeoisie or the Nazis for their wages, or in this case, their lives. Nevertheless, the Holocaust lasted 12 years until other countries were able to gain ground on Hitler’s territories. Many prisoners were rescued and freed from the camps. Shoshana and Sol were just one of the Jewish couples that survived and were able to make their way to the United states where they are able to share their life with family and friends, and their legacy of survival will last
