The Murder Methods of Nazi Germany In 1933 when Nazi Germany came into power, the Jewish population was over 9 million. By 1945 nearly two out of every three Jewish people were murdered in the Holocaust. This methodical genocide targeted mainly the Jewish population, but also the Gypsies, the disabled and some Slavic people. Various other groups were targeted because of political, religious and behavioral grounds such as Communists, Socialists, Jehovah’s Witnesses and homosexuals. The German leaders called this mass murder “The Final Solution of the Jewish Question,” because they believed their race was superior while the Jewish population was inferior. After the morning roll call the prisoners were receive breakfast, which consisted of nothing but imitation coffee or herbal tea. A typical lunch was a watery soup with a turnip or potato peel, if you were lucky. For dinner the prisoners received black bread with a minute piece of sausage, margarine, marmalade or cheese. The amount of food the prisoners were given was not nearly enough to satisfy a regular person, but especially not a prisoner working long, laborious hours. The bread given at dinner was supposed to last until morning causing many prisoners to hid it on themselves. A survivor of the holocaust, Kity Hart Moxon, spoke of the significance of food when she remembered thinking “I’m taking this piece of bread from this dead body … and I’m taking this one pair of boots and I can sell it...” Stealing from a dead body is just one example of the desperation prisoners had for survival. The lack of food in the concentration camps combined with the poor diet and hard labor lead to many thousands of people dying from starvation
