It is very likely that your first choice would be Hollywood, California because it is the self-proclaimed “entertainment capital of the world.” But depending on where you live and what your projected cost-of-living budget, coupled with troubling climatic data and some controversial standards and practices, Hollywood may not be the ideal place for you to establish a career in film. (Hensley) This is the result of many sound stage complexes running operations in Atlanta including Pinewood Atlanta Studios, EUE/Screen Gems Studios, Atlanta Metro Studios, Tyler Perry Studios and Blackhall Studios. (Hensley) In addition, the very same climate in Hollywood that was once inviting to filmmakers has become one of the things that is driving them away with rampant wildfires that can last for days, drought-like conditions, and the constant potential for earthquakes like the Northridge earthquake of 1994 which, at $20 billion in property damage, was the costliest natural disaster in the United States until Hurricane Katrina. Maio includes a valid argument at the beginning of her review of Another Woman in which she states “If male filmmakers cared what I and other feminists thought about there work, I’d almost pity their predicament. They face what amounts to a no-win situation” this adds levity to her point but it does not stand for a resolution between Maio and Hollywood (174). At the end of the paragraph, Maio goes on to state that “It seems as though it matter little wether it’s a wether it’s a bimbo bit part or a dramatic lead, male filmmakers can’t seem to keep themselves from saying nasty things about women.…

The American Film industry, even in the 1940’s, was thought to be a progressive space full of liberal ideologies and access to diversity, but unfortunately, this was not the case for African Americans, especially pre-dating the Civil Rights Movement. “Classical Hollywood, in its role as America’s dream factory largely maintained the myth of Black inferiority while minimizing America’s long history of racial injustice. ”African Americans were discriminated against in all areas of society, including films where they were underrepresented and often cast to play insignificant roles. The Civil Rights Movement was the necessary response to decades of segregation and discrimination within society. After the Movement, hard-working and talented African…

Critical Assessment of a Work by Gary D. Rhodes Gary D. Rhodes of Queen’s University Belfast challenges many current conceptions about Hollywood in his work “ ‘Movie’: How a Single Word Shaped Hollywood Cinema.” Specifically, Rhodes argues that the audience has power over the corporation in this industry. He explains how the word “movie” is a major representation if this idea. Rhodes presents this argument because he has seen how common it has become to accuse corporate Hollywood of finessing it’s viewers. From white actors portraying black men in classics, such as Othello, or even from white actress playing dark skinned women, such as Mariane Pearl, white actors portraying people of color in american films has been a tradition in Hollywood. Hollywood has historically made the decision to cast white actors instead of letting minorities play their own roles. While Hollywood is known for being a white industry, over the past years more noise, such as the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite (8), has been made about the lack of diversity in their films.…

From this, I lost my audience’s belief that I was competent of the information I was reiterating to them. At the introduction of my speech I believe I started out fairly strong and gave a good run down of the coming speech.…
