Such terrorists understand the potential and power that the United States government holds and made attempts to mend their ways. The most taboo theories was President George W. Bush and the United States’s government’s involvement with the Al Qaeda in 911 and how the United States government was responsible for the Oklahoma City bombings. Vidal was a savage with his writing and very critical, refusing to be silenced by shamefully committing the sin of publishing such offensive claims in…
The film ‘Avatar’ was controversial in nature and questioned some sensitive and important issues. By doing this, James Cameron sends a warning to his western audience. The film demonstrates that terror only leads to more terror. It presents to the audience how beliefs of righteousness cause conflict between parties, warning the audience not to make the same mistakes. Furthermore, James Cameron’s production warns his audience about ignorance, showing the importance of listening and understanding.…
Since their portrayal of terrorism runs, as mentioned, essentially contrary to the overwhelming majority of media outlets, the reader’s interest is immediately held. In the same vein, the authors cater to skeptical readers by providing stories and statistics to back their claims – in fact, evidentiary exposition comprises roughly half of the two page article. And finally, in presenting their main claims, the authors use mitigating language to make their arguments both stronger and more appealing. However, their arguments are by no means bland – if another large-scale, well-planned terrorist attack occurred on U.S. soil tomorrow, most of the claims in this article would seem incredibly arrogant and foolish. That danger represents both the greatest weakness and strength of mockery: it strengthens the authors’ claims by staking their reputation and image on them.…
Following the events that occurred on September 11, 2001, Muslims have been subjected to the vile stereotype that projects all Muslims as terrorists. In Brent Staples’ essay “Just Walk on by: Black Men and Public Space,” he argues that black men are victimized because of society's perception of them. This can be compared to the victimization of Muslims due to society’s image of them as well; however, this stereotype is incorrect based on statistics, evidence, and my personal experience. In this society, the argument is that the actions of Muslim terrorists come from their religion.…
The most memorable terrorist attack from 2001 to 2015 was on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001 (Paul, Dorin, Bugnar, and Mester 6). About three-thousand innocent people lost their lives during this violent attack (“Department of Government and Justice Studies”). This important event in American History should be remembered to hopefully prevent it from ever happening again. As terrorism changed from the 1980s to today, so did the types of people who became terrorists (O’Connor). This paper will look at what terrorism is, the types of terrorism, who becomes terrorists, and what their motives may be.…
My three identities are America’s worst fears. My identity is what prevents those who are closed-minded to sleep at night. Men disrespect me. Those who are privileged look down on me, and the racist fear I will bomb their “Land of the Free.” Kwame Anthony Appiah wrote his article “Racial Identities” explaining our different identities and how each of our “collective identities” makes up a script or narrative of shaping our life.…
To the general audiences, American Sniper’s purpose was to teach audiences about the internal struggles of a war veteran and to inspire audiences to support the United States war effort. In order to create this inspirational and educational story, many Iraqi lives had to be ended by Chris Kyle. The audience is so enthralled by the narrative of a sniper struggling upon returning home that it does not recognize how the Iraqi people are portrayed. The portrayal of these character harken back to archaic Orientalist stereotypes created in order to impede the eastern world and facilitate the western world’s rise to power. In today’s progressive society these sorts of portrayals have no place and the only way that they can be stopped is by exposing films that utilize these stereotypes in order to make…
Terrorism is an extremely prevalent problem in the world today. Every month there is news of a bombing in some city, or a shooting in some neighborhood, and Western media has made Islam the face of terrorism. While Jihadists only make up a fraction of the proponents of terrorism, the media has caused “terrorism” to be synonymous with “Muslim.” Even understandable acts of rebellion, like the liberation movement of Palestine against Israel, are seen as Islamic radicalism because misguided individuals perpetrate acts of terrorism. The movie Paradise Now, by director Hany Abu-Assad, shows the ordeals of two friends, Khaled and Said, who enlist in a Palestinian resistance group to coordinate suicide attacks on Tel Aviv, Israel.…

A countless amount believe terrorism is affiliated with certain religions, especially Islam, as well as Middle Eastern countries. In the short film “Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People”, Dr. Jack Shaheen makes an effort to point out their shameful stereotypes, he comments saying they are “portrayed as sub-humans”. Ranging from adult films all the way to “Aladdin”, a children film, directors go out of there way to portray Arabs, with most of these movies having nothing to do with the Middle East. Hollywood releases a mass amount of movies and “nearly 25% of all Hollywood movies” portray Arabs as either a joke or reference a stereotype about them. In cartoons, they are portrayed as “stock villains” and used for “comedic relief”. Some of the light stereotypes show “magic carpets” or “programming snakes in and out of baskets” (Dr. Jack Shaheen).…

Martha Crenshaw’s 1981 article “The Causes of Terrorism” outlines an analysis on the causes of terrorism by examining the preconditions, precipitants, reasons, the psychological aspects of the individual. Crenshaw attempts to show the reader the causes of terrorism in this article. She begins by providing a definition of terrorists. She defines terrorism as the premeditated use or threat of violence committed by a group of people in order to convey a political message. She then divides her paper into three distinct categories that explore the framework, the reasons, and the motivation for terrorism.…
Currently, I work as a researcher and policy planner for Presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. My job is informing him on the brief historical chronology leading to present day extremism, providing him with clear advice for how to differentiate between groups and their perspectives, supply him with points that he can use in a debate to refute some of the fear and hate-mongering statements made by others, as well as give him effective suggestions for how to confront Global Jihadism in ways including and beyond military. As his secondhand, I would allow Bernie to introduce the topic as such: “My fellow Americans -- tonight, I want to speak to you about what the United States will do with our friends and allies to degrade and combat the current…
