Last but not least, my final point of comparison is tone. Tone is essentially the attitude of a piece of writing, a person, or a situation. The tone of Runaway is very despairing whenever Holly thinks about her mom. When Holly even writes about her mom, in her journal, she starts to cry. She usually is spunky, even when on the run. Wendelin Van Draanen presents Holly as a smart, brave, yet vulnerable girl. She remembers tons of regretful memories about her mom, especially when her she and her mom lose their beat-up orange van a.k.a. their home. She finds that memory the most depressing, because at the end she figures out that “my mother loved heroin more than she loved me.”
Likewise, Holly is very impassioned most of the time during her journey. Holly has a great attitude when she escapes, because she wants to become a sea gypsy by traveling all the way down to Los Angeles, to chill by the Pacific Ocean. When she arrives, she changes her mind right when she lays her eyes on L.A. She describes it as “all concrete”, and “gloomy”.
