You make sure your clothes are perfect, you don’t smell bad, you take one last look in the mirror before you head off and you are reminded by your reflection that you do not fit the “American” mold. All though you are fully aware of this you pack up your nerves and head off to the interview. Thoughts may include, don’t talk too much, answer all that questions right, don’t do anything stupid as you head to the interview. You are interviewing at a store that you already like a lot…

The recent housing developments in Hollister illustrates how an individual’s race and gender can allow them to gain an unfair advantage or privilege over others. Only individuals with access to a significant amount of wealth would be able to purchase these houses due to the incredibly high prices. More often than not, these individuals would be white males. As a result of their skin color and sex, they are able to have high skilled jobs and receive a higher paycheck than their colleagues. A recent article by CNN substantiates this assertion by revealing that African Americans and Hispanics are experiencing lower wages, household wealth, home ownership and higher unemployment in comparison to white Americans.…

My initial reaction to the data was that there are a staggering amount of low income children in California, making it highly important that those working with children are aware of how prevalent poverty is within our communities. The article also cited that many families that are above the poverty levels are not much better off since most families require twice the income of the federal poverty level to meet their basic needs. I currently work at an afterschool program in a low income community and there have been several instances where I assisted families in seeking out local resources to assist them in times of hardship. One area of concern I frequently hear from families as of late is the lack of affordable housing in Ventura, which is…

Long hours of constantly standing and running up and down the store addressing customers and trying to keep the store presentable is certainly not a job I would settle for. Retail is a job for students that come and go, that are trying to make extra money for themselves, but not for somebody who is already of age, has a family to maintain, and bills to pay. Many people settle for less and are so used to being in a certain place doing the same thing every day that they fear change and do not want to seek better opportunities. I have worked in retail for only two years, my first year at a store called Hollister. My experience there was that I only saw young teens working, most of them being so irresponsible.…

Social workers must be able to critically assess the environment in order to identify its needs and functions (Netting, 2012).
