The Importance Of Music In High By The Beach By Kira Hollinger

Music is a very crucial part of life, it helps us express ourselves when we don’t have the right words to do so. In her article “Why Is Music Important,” author Kira Hollinger asserts that music is a significant part of life, and that it gives you many types of outlets to express yourself whether it’s through singing or playing an instrument (Hollinger 1). Hollinger states, “Music is much more than the art of combining tones; music is in everything around us. Music can be found everywhere in our world”(Hollinger 1). What the author is stating is that music isn’t just necessarily keys and rhythms mashed together, it actually means something. Venice beach is known as a junkie capital “Venice's edgy legacy owes something to its chequered history – hippie locale of the 60s, junkie-central in the 70s, gun crime in the 80s, and the arrival of the crackheads in the 90s” (Fowler 1). This song represents this specific community in a way where you would think this is the place to go to get intoxicated or if you want to do drugs, so it’s definitely more miserable compared to the song Malibu. In this song the lyrics are very distressful and sad, it also makes you see the beach in a negative way. Throughout most of the song she is repeating the phrase “I just wanna get high by the beach” over and over again. She just wants to forget her pain and sorrow; therefore, she wants to go to the beach and get high. In one part of the song Lana sings “ We won’t survive we’re sinking into the sand” (Ray 1). She’s talking about her relationship and how it’s over and they aren’t going to make it, and when she references the sand she’s saying that they’re slowly drowning into the sand. When saying this she depicts the beach in a bad way by mentioning how the sand is burying them. Throughout the song she is singing about her toxic relationship and how she is done with her boyfriend. Hermosa beach is known for the amount of outdoor activities it has such as volleyball, paddleball, surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. This beach is known for people having fun and just enjoying themselves. Unlike all the other songs I chose to write about this song has a very different perception towards the beach. It’s a very upbeat and happy song that talks about enjoying yourself at the beach. The song starts off by saying, “I just want to relax, the oceans waves are going back and forth the wind is blowing, and then he states let’s go back to the beach and cool down” (Sako 1). He’s just singing about all these experiences you go through when at the beach and how when you go there you just want to forget about all your worries and have a good time. This song is just very upbeat and happy when you hear you just want to go to the beach with your friends and have a great time not really caring about anything else. This song makes you see the party side of Los Angeles, where there is drinking and just enjoying yourself. This song is in Armenian and personally I don’t really enjoy listening to Armenian music; however, when this song comes on I can’t help but smile and want to get up and dance. It’s just one of those songs that can make you smile when you’re in a bad mood and to be it represents Hermosa beach in a very positive especially if you
