Holistic medicine is defined as the form of healing, which considers the whole person -- body, mind, spirit, and emotions -- in the quest for optimal health and wellness. Many people may consider holistic or alternative medicine over western medicine because of the side effects of today’s medicines. Although, when, choosing holistic medicine there are adverse side affects which many times those can be deadly. One reason is because of certain prescription drug medications might have severe reactions to which it can harm the patient and at even cause death in worst cases. In an interview done by Liz Szabo in USAToday she quotes Sarah Erush a clinical pharmacy manager at children’s hospital in Philadelphia, about a twelve-year-old girl who came into the hospital complaining of bad abdominal pain. After doctors running some tests, Erush says “Doctors diagnosed her with acute pancreatitis, in which the pancreatic enzymes begin digesting not just food, but the pancreas itself. This was the most likely cause of the girls condition: toxic side effects from more then 80 dietary supplements the girls mother had been giving her for over four years”. (Erush, 1). Luckily after treatment in the hospital she was able to go home two-weeks later. This mild example was caught on fast and was treatable right away.
