During the Medieval ages, they had festivals and holidays like in present times. These festivals were extremely lavish because of the high social status you receive and holidays were mainly religious, unlike current observed holidays . Festivals and holidays in the Medieval age were used as forms as amusement, entertainment, and acts of religious practice. Holidays were a necessity to Medieval life. The word holiday was derived from the word “holy days.” (Salisbury, 2004) This would be a reason Medieval holidays were all religious and none were secula, like in present day. Easter, the holiday celebrated in March, was not always celebrated on the same day every year (Noguchi, 2009). Although Easter is still similar to how we it is celebrated today. For example we would have people start left nine weeks before Easter Sunday and when it comes to Whitsunday eight weeks later it ends (Noguchi, 2009). The next common holiday is April Fool’s day, which is celebrated in the month of April. April Fool’s Day is not as quite the same from now. In Medieval Times, Jesters and Lords would spend the entire day to prank and tell jokes to people. Although some people do not know about May Day it’s a popular holiday to be celebrated during the first of May. The event they celebrate is the Queen of May chooses villagers to dance around the maypole (Medieval Holidays, ??). In addition Midsummer’s Eve is the next holiday that begins in June. Midsummer’s Eve is a holiday spent to glorify the middle of summer, also known as the summer solstice. After that a favored holiday by many others is Halloween. This holiday is on the last day of october and has the reputation for all death, ghosts, and spirits; more so candy and costumes for a more present time. Although, instead of people wearing costumes children would put on masks around the neighborhood and people would be receiving fortunes.
