HOLES ESSAY
In the novel “Holes” by Louis Sachar and the film “Holes” directed by Andrew Davis, there are many similarities and differences between both the book and movie. The things that this essay will explore are the similarities and differences in the characters, setting, plot/storyline and stylistic features.

The characters in the novel are presented differently to that in the film. An example of this is that roasting, less friendly in the film, emotional responses are different in the film to the novel. This is a good example because in the novel there was more roasting, the characters were less friendly in the film and that emotional responses are different in the film to the movie. Also, the novel presented the characters to be more reserved and the physical descriptions did not match in the film to the novel. The physical descriptions didn’t match because in the novel it said that Stanley is chubby boy but in the film, he wasn’t chubby in fact he was skinny.

The setting in the novel is different to the film. An example of this is that in the film there wasn’t a hammock but in the novel, it was described as being stretched between the oak trees and that it belonged

An example of this is that Zigzag’s birthday was not celebrated in the movie but was in the book. This is a good example because it was one of Zigzag’s memory when he was at the camp with his friends that he made while he was there. Also, zero found his mum and meet her at the end of the film but at the end of the novel zero didn’t find his mum. Another, storyline that is different is that Kate Barlow was not allowed to speak to Sam in the novel but in the film the relationship between the two of them was more pronounced and that Kate Barlow was in the boat when Sam was shot in the novel but in the film, she witnessed it from the shore. Also, the development of Zero and Stanley’s friendship is explored more in the film then the

Many books have been made into movies, and people tend to notice that the movies do not highlight certain details that the books do. In A Separate Peace, there were many differences between the book in the movie, like Gene’s visit to Devon, the character relationships, and the different perspective of the movie. Gene’s visit to Devon 15 years later is the first scene of the book. The movie started at the start of his summer session. Missing this scene of the book made it lose the feeling that Gene forgave himself for Finny’s death.…

The book has bigger and better scenes that make a big differences, and the parts should be in the movie as well. Example would be, Susie’s father gets beat up in a corn field, with a baseball bat. Her father got beat up pretty bad and while he was in the hospital susie’s mother kisses and has an affair with the detective that is on susie’s case. In the movie it switches it all up and susie’s mother leaves…

For example the movie missed Mcmurphy’s red hair. “The new redhead admission, Mcmurphy …goes over to the acute side with all his kidding and joking” (Kesey 19). This is from the book and tells you the Mcmurphy has red hair and that foreshadows his wild and joking nature. In the movie the only foreshadowing of his wild nature is when he kisses the guard after the guard has unlocked the handcuffs on Mcmurphy.…

Keeping how the characters act in the novel and movie the same was a big key factor. Keeping the characters the same helped keep details the same and helped us understand aspects better. Knowing the details of certain characters and how they handled their situations helped me imagine what they were going through and how they handled the situation due to the fact that I knew what they were thinking in their head. Another example of why the novel was more effective was the scene with Mike Chambers. In the novel, Mike Chambers was introduced to us, but in the movie there was no Mike Chambers.…

Also, the characters portrayal is much different when comparing the book and movie. Lastly, there is a significant difference in the chemistry and feelings of love, at least that are portrayed in the book are nonexistent in the movie. One major aspect that plays a large role in book to movie adaptations is the screenwriter’s ability to transform the book. The screenwriter must be able to not only transform the book, but he must have the critical adaptability to make it successful. “This involves first distribution, then audience reception.”…

It seems an unfair view to expect a movie about a book to be exactly the same down to every single detail. Communities of fans will always find something wrong with a story, for it has “failed” to match expectation. Books are a place where someone can be dragged into the story and forget about everything else for a short while. Movies do the exact same thing, except it is seen as an easier way than books for a lot of people. Ignoring obvious differences (such as the fact that one is in picture form, and the other is in words), movies and books may not be so different after all.…
