Hole in the wall is a business currently owned by John Barker, originally the business’ main operations was the door to door sales of double glazed windows. Since its beginnings have diversified into the production of the windows due to the purchasing of a factory from a friend which has allowed the business to expand largely. Due to this expansion it has caused Barker to hire more sales staff, increasing the overall number of staff hired close to twenty. However possibly due to the expansion there has been many issues between the different departments which has affect the overall performance of them all and perhaps have caused one of the fitting teams to quit. This highlights the issues resulting from how Barker views his workers and consequently the way in which he chooses to lead them. Therefore this shows that even though the business has a large range of issues in many different areas, all the problems are the direct result of the ineffectiveness of how Barker decides to manage and control the business.
Section 1 – The issues of conflict between the different departments
As described Hole in the Wall has many issues and problems resulting from the ineffectiveness of Barkers leadership or in some cases lack of it. One of the problems that the business faces due to this the confrontation between the different departments of the business. As shown in appendix 1, Hole in the Wall has many different departments all with different functions and objectives. In attempts to follow “Taylor’s assumption that man is driven by economic needs” Barker has attempted to motivate each department through different monetary means. As shown in Appendix, Hole in the Wall’s senior staff currently consist of Pat, Les and Jobson however the main issue is between Jobson and Les. It is known that the two have previously had many major issues when trying to communicate and hold meetings with the a compliment of Barker, but due to the major issues and conflicting personalities these meetings were disbanded as they were ineffective when trying to accomplish its task. Barker has yet to perform any activities which could help solve these issues other than splitting the two up, this may have a direct issue on the two’s motivation level when considering the works of Maslow and Herzberg; who developed and continued the works of Maslow. “Maslow arranged human needs in the form of a hierarchy”, Maslow describes that the “once a lower need has been satisfied, it longer acts as a strong motivator” therefore “the needs of the next higher level in the hierarchy demand satisfaction”. In the case of the senior staff, it could be said that the lowest level; those being safety needs and physiological needs, are satisfied, however due to the issues between Jobson and Les the third need the “Love needs – these include affection, sense of belonging…“ may not be satisfied preventing the two of them from achieving the high tiers. Since this need is not satisfied Barker should have made it his duty
