He’d only reply with, “playing hockey,” and then he’d go back to the game. I never understood why he was so into the game until I got older and ended up watching it next to him. Now I still ask that same question, only its towards the referee’s. “Crap calls, that's what.” Dad always got into the games, actually my whole family consists of hockey enthusiasts. Although I was never truly a hockey fan, and certainly not a hockey player until one fall when I was about 10 years old. I forgot about the sheets for a few days, and only remembered when I saw my dad turn on the tv to watch that night’s hockey game. I rushed to my backpack, got the papers, and stuffed them in my dad's face. “What are these he asked?”, I didn't answer, only sat and watched him read through the sheet. ”So you want to play hockey?”, I only nodded, and he scanned the rest of the sheet, his face seemed to brighten as he read the last line. “You don’t even know how to skate.” That statement was almost like a blow to the stomach, I wanted to play so bad, and my dad just shot down my hopes. “But, you’re lucky your dad used to be a great hockey player.” He brought up my spirits, and called my brother into the room to ask us about playing at skate city. We both said we wanted to play, and our dad was almost glowing. “I’m glad you guys said that, I can teach you how to skate, then we can sign you guys up.” The next few days were full of simple skating, and things we needed to do to be decent hockey

My domination of easily breezing by my neighbors in street hockey and always ranked at the top of stat sheets for scoring in recreational hockey, abruptly ended when I joined my first competitive travel hockey team. My first game exemplified the setbacks my fear imposed on my team when I frighteningly moved out of the way of an enormous player to grant him a free pass to the net in which he scored the game winning goal. Shamefully looking at me as if I were an ally of the other team, I became alienated after my team after they began the tradition of…
