Hockey Camp
The day was finally here, my friend Ben Steuve and I had been waiting a month for the Colin Chalk Hockey Camp to start. We knew that the camp leader, Colin Chalk, had played pro so the camp had to be top of the line. Ben and I are best friends who played hockey together and it seemed like it was meant to be that we played together. We have been playing hockey ever since I can remember. The way we found out about Colin was through our other friend who used to play with us and his dad played with Colin Chalk. Now all I can think about is getting on the ice.
The camp was from Monday to Friday for nine hours. We had to bring lunch and a snack. The schedule each day was to arrive at 8:30 AM, go on at 9:00

Ben and I loved the camp, because we both knew it was making us so much better. What we really were looking forward to was the last day. We were told that it was going to be the best day of the camp. At the beginning of the last day we began with a skills competition. The different games were passing, shooting, and speed skating. That allowed us to show what we learned and if you won one of the competitions then you got a prize. The second ice time was even better. We had a skill shootout where you could dress up and do any type of shot or trick play. I dressed up in a bunch of different red wing things and a red morph suit. After that we had a big scrimmage and the winner got a big prize and bragging rights. What meant a lot to me was the hard hat prize.
The hard hat prize is a yellow hard hat that is given out two times a day. There were two hats, one for the little kids and one for the older kids. At the end of the camp the last winner gets to keep it and it has all of the signatures of the people who won it. It’s given out to the hardest worker that day and both Ben and I got it on the second day. That meant a lot and I was so glad that I got the chance to go to this camp, especially with my best

"One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do,"this quote by Henry Ford reconnects when it comes to facing something you're afraid of; our fears. When we get over fears, we realize only then that we had the courage before to do that something we were afraid of doing. One time I was afraid was when I started ice skating. I was at a party for my younger sister's friend at an ice ring.…

The Tournoi International de Hockey is the biggest youth hockey tournament in North America and is held each year in Quebec City, Canada. Every year thousands of kids ages 10-12 come to this tournament, and I was fortunate to be one of the selected players from Georgia to play in this tournament. Through this two week tournament, I got the chance to stay with a family from Quebec and experience what they do on a daily basis. With this family, whom I am still in contact with today, I learned a new culture, got to tour the city and have some memories that I will never forget. To add to the experience, all the games were played the Pepsi Colisee, which is a NHL sized rink.…

Most professional hockey players in Canada were born between January and March. As children, the players born in those months were seen as more mature than the others. This put the older children in a league with more attention and better coaches, giving them the opportunity to practice harder and longer than those that were not in their league. In the second half of his book, the idea…

My domination of easily breezing by my neighbors in street hockey and always ranked at the top of stat sheets for scoring in recreational hockey, abruptly ended when I joined my first competitive travel hockey team. My first game exemplified the setbacks my fear imposed on my team when I frighteningly moved out of the way of an enormous player to grant him a free pass to the net in which he scored the game winning goal. Shamefully looking at me as if I were an ally of the other team, I became alienated after my team after they began the tradition of…

I was terrified. I would try my hardest to get a good spot on the team by copying what the other girls did. But then I found out that I needed to do the things my coach said and forget what the other girls were doing and focus on what I was doing in my own way and that i needed to pay attention of how I was playing and concentrate on how all the girls passed the puck and that I needed to start being more confident of I play. Hockey has taught me that anything is possible and that I just need to make goals to accomplish them. At first when I started out playing hockey, I had a goal that I learn to do a crossover in two weeks.…

After a long taxing day of school in the frigid month of January, I got into a car with my teammate and headed off to a varsity hockey game against Bridgewater Raynham. As soon as I open up the transparent glass doors, I can feel the brisk air brush upon my face. Instantly, the fond memory of my first rink experience poped up in my head when my cousin got an assist for his Norwood Mustangs varsity hockey team. I was young, only around six or seven years old. I remember him having a clear shot, but passing the puck to his linemate for the sure goal.…

It was a brisk fall evening with the sun just about to set behind a hill. I was 10 years old, playing in my third season of football, and my first ever game under the bright lights surrounding the high school stadium. The time had finally come, the lights had been on and warming up for several minutes, I was going to play a game under the lights on the high school field. My experiences that night were not forgotten, but today I couldn’t even tell you if we won the game that night. The lessons I learned that night weren’t about winning and losing, I had done plenty of that already in my life.…
