The Nobbys lighthouse designed by Alexander Dawson was first lit in 1858 because of the prominent position at the entrance of the port and the crucial use of navigation. Nobbys light is also the third lighthouse constructed in NSW after the Macquarie light in 1818 and in the same year with the Hornby lighthouse. Before the establishment of the present lighthouse (1854), the first beacon was lit on this area (Signal Hill) in 1804 with a range of merely 7 kilometres. Later in 1821, an oil burning light in a large metal device was established, which was visible for 12 kilometres, but shortly reverted to coal since the oil light was not reliable.
