Why is it that so many people say that Hobbes has a “negative” outlook when it comes to various things like human nature and government? I feel Hobbes sees man as he truly is. However, the only reason that people view it as negative is that it detracts from the rather rosy picture many try to paint humans to be. People don 't realize Hobbes accounts for the true nature of people and it shows in the way he frames governing. Right and wrong is a subjective guideline that changes from person to person. In the end man will only seek to do what’s in their best interest. Meaning “right” is only a matter of what I as a person want to do.
While good natured people do in fact exist within the world it is but a simple fact of life that those are a minority amongst the population. In the end the only thing that people will look out for is their own desires, wants and needs. Hobbes put it perfectly, “The object of man 's desire is not to enjoy once only, and for one instant of time; but to assure for ever, the way of his future desires.” The people need a firm and renowned ruler to guide them. Without proper governance society would only manage to collapse under the sheer weight of it’s own hubris. Anarchy would only serve to set back humanity. The one true answer to all the problems of the people is an Absolute Monarch. It’s the only way possible to make sure that decorum persists. One ruler to preside over the people and give them the direction that they need, while at the same time…
