Gender is a social construct that outlines certain roles that are” masculine” and “feminine.” Sexuality is similar, but based on what category people rather fit into, built on their sexual attractions. Gender and sexuality are both socially constructed. Women are just as capable as men, but according to society women are always a step behind. Reading 22, through their discussion they demonstrate the forever lasting impact on girls and women, boys and men as a result of the difference in treatment in schools.(sadker, p.307) However, males tend to control the classroom conversations, therefore, girls receive less time, less help, and fewer challenges, meaning they barely receive any attention the way the boys do. The social institution within education, the way the teachers interact with the students it seems as if they are being unfair to the females than the boys, which makes it harder for the girls to gain any props for any of their work or participation. Hidden curriculum impacts racial inequality and perpetuates racism by race and ethnicity, and class, therefore, the range of societal issues that affect the life chances of different groups. The institution of education maintains a system of oppression and privilege, therefore, society has its ways of ranging from racial disparities in wealth, poverty, and educational opportunities. Kahlenberg states, poor people of color are especially likely to wind up in schools filled with others like them. (Kahlenberg, p.291) In other words, if they can’t provide a good education for their children, then those children are subject to receive an education that will only allow them to work certain jobs.
