Hmong Bedroom Observation

When I got to Lao Family building, my sister went to get us a chair so we can sit and put our stuff down. The room that they were practicing has no chairs but a small stage and a few small storage room for chairs and a table in the corner. If there wasn’t a stage, it would feel like a small empty gym.
The stage has a huge picture of our Hmong president General Vang Pao hanging on the wall. There’s two huge door that leads you to a hallway with windows where you can see University street and cars driving past through the building.
I sat down while my sister joined the group as they line up and the instructor start to play the music. I observe and notice that they don’t have a particular position that they need to stay. They can be in any place

My sister came to me and told me that they’re divided into two group. The first group stay in the front because they’re the more advance dancer while the second stay in the back because they still need more help or those whose a beginner. This makes sense because not all people learn at the same pace.
The first group has more people. I notice that the first group are those whose younger like my sister and her friends and other young adults and older adults too. There was one who look like she’s in her 60’s was in the front and was really good. I was surprise a little because I thought she’d stay in the back. She had short hair and was wearing an inch heel. Most of them was wearing an inch heel.
The people in the second group was two young girls that seem to be in their late 20’s and older adults who seem to be in their 40’s. On of the younger girl was wearing glasses and had a messy bun was holding her phone and sometimes would be on her phone while dancing. I notice that she was the one who made the most mistakes. Her legs was always moving too fast. She was either a beat ahead of everyone or a beat behind. She was constantly looking at people around her for guidance. But she wasn’t the only one. I notice that when one dancer make a mistake, they look at people around them for guidance. My sister and her friend did it

After listening to the same song three times, they decided to change the song to a country song. I had thought that they’re moving on but then once they started dancing, I notice that they’re making the same dance move as before. I kept watching until I realize that they dance to different songs but it’s the same dance move for most of the song.
After a while the first group started learning a new dance while the second group’s still learning the same move. After a long run through with the dance, the instructor ask them if they had gotten it. I heard one of the dancers jokingly said, “No. after we learn it, we’ll not remember it.” There was a few giggles but I kind of know that it wasn’t so funny to them because they really wanted to get it right.
I switch to observe the first group. The instructor was teaching them a new dance, telling them the steps and everything. Once she finally play the song, I notice that a few people was struggling. They hadn’t adjust to them yet. After a while of practicing from both group, I heard the instructor from the back said, “Ok, we’re ready. Can you replay the song

Since 1975 the Hmong have experienced and accomplished many milestones in the United States. Previously in Laos there was a secret war which was a part of the Vietnam War and the Cold War. This secret war was the reason that about half of the Hmong of Laos became refugees and resettled in the United States of America. “Many Hmong who had formerly been allies of the Unite States and supporters of the Royal Lao Government become targets of postwar mistrust, retaliation, and retribution by the post-1975 communist government of Laos” (Pfeifer, Chiu, and Yang, p.3, 2013). This lead to the movement of thousands of refugees from Laos to Thailand and later to the United States in 1975.…

She walked out in the middle of the street and started doing one of the most enjoyable things you can do, dancing. Although she did not seem to be enjoying it, she looked panicked, her face was contorted, and her eyes drawn to the sky as if she was in a trance. By the end of the week there was a group of 30 and then by the time a month had passed there were around 400. The authorities for some reason with no logic behind it thought that the cure was more dancing. They even went as far as building a stage and hiring professional dancers.…

Swerving around a mass sea of students while quickly glancing at my schedule and the classrooms around me, I was a new student trying to find my classes at the large campus of Neuqua Valley High School. Even though it was my junior year, I was a new student after transferring schools and was unfamiliar with the campus and with many of the students there, until I found out about a hip-hop/breakdancing club called Urban Arts Club (UAC). Since I was ten years old, I have always been interested in learning how to breakdance, but I was not able to learn when I lived in Vietnam. After discovering UAC, I anxiously joined the club to learn how to breakdance and to try and become acquainted with the students of the club. As a new member of UAC, I learned the fundamentals of breakdancing, began practicing with the other members, and helped out the current and new members in order…

Since I am interning at Oklahoma Blood Institute as a Human Resource Assistant, I felt as though this was the perfect opportunity for me to get a better understanding of the non-profit organization. At Oklahoma Blood Institute, they offer their employees training on phlebotomy technology, component manufacturing laboratory and testing laboratory processes and procedures, and on-boarding once a month for new employees. Since blood, needles and I do not get along, I asked the Human Resource Director, Joseph McNeil, if I could attend Oklahoma Blood Institutes on-boarding session held on October 3, 2013 from…
