HELLP Syndrome
HELLP stands for, H- hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells), EL- elevated liver enzymes, LP- Low platelet counts. HELLP was once known as edema-proteinuria-hypertension gestosis type B in the early 20th century and was later renamed in 1982 by Louis Weinstein. Although the idea is controversial, some propose that HELLP is a severe form of preeclampsia. The cause of HELLP syndrome is unknown. This paper will aim to educate on what HELLP syndrome is, symptoms, and nursing interventions.
