What is Aids? The full form of aids is (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). This is not a disease by itself but when a person contracts HIV (the human immunodeficiency virus) the body starts getting weak. This disease is contracted through blood and sexual fluids. HIV affects the immune system called the immunodeficiency. The person with HIV gets frequently ill from disease that would not generally affect normal person. HIV starts to affect the immune cells called the CDT4 cells and slowly kills it. HIV takes a long time to manifest; this period is called the asymptomatic time. The efforts of organizations like WHO,UNITED NATIONS and all the works of individuals and nations seems to give us glimmers of hope. Especially programs that are targeted at preventing the transmission of HIV from sex workers in countries like Africa, Thailand and India has had a great impact on HIV. USAID and US based organization has helped to finance these programs, so has Bill and Malinda Gates foundation. The commonly used form of treatment for people affected by HIV is called the ART. This form of treatment is also used to prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child. Proper treatment to effected HIV sex workers are often unsuccessful due to the stigma attached to the disease. The other reason why HIV affected people do not get treatment is due lack of access of this kind of treatment. Other people that are affected by this disease are drug users, transgender and homosexuals and bisexuals that constantly change partners. Every year thousands of women and children from my country become victims of human trafficking. They are sold across brothels in India as sex workers. In these brothels even the basic dignity of living are not provided. They are forced to service up to 20 to 30 clients per day. They were constantly beaten and tortured and when they get infected with HIV or show symptoms of AID they were left to die on the streets. The open boarder that we share with India and the human greed makes it very difficult to track and control human trafficking. My mother used to volunteer for an INGO organization called the Maiti Nepal. This means the mother’s home in Nepal. The head of this organization Ms. Anuradha Koirala used to visit these brothels and rescue as many victims as she could. Unfortunately most of the women and children she rescued were already HIV infected or suffering from full blown Aids. She along with volunteers like my mother would make it possible for these victims to rehabilitate, get treatment and learn skills so that they are able to take care of themselves. They would get free treatment and hospice care. For the first time in many years these rescued sex workers lived with dignity, care and love in their “mother’s home. Lived without fear and lived
