Was Hitler seeking a World war in 1939 when he invaded Poland?
On the morning of September 1, 1939 the decision was made to invade Poland. The German army attacked Poland. We now know today that this was the beginning of the Second World War. Today there is a lot historians know about what happened but, one thing historians have not come across the answer to and continue to debate about, Did Hitler intend to start the second world war when invading Poland? This is a complicated debate. One reason this is complicated is because we have no way of knowing what Hitler was thinking at the time when Germany commenced the invasion. There are many factors that can be debated on both sides of this argument. One factor that supports the belief that Hitler did not intend on starting a world war and only wanted a war between Germany and Poland is the German economy at the time. The

Or, Did he just mean for it to be a war between Germany and Poland? Yet, there is so much information left to be debated. The debate that will be discussed is between; Timothy Mason believes that Hitler did in fact intend to start a world war when invading Poland. To support his belief he writes Nazism Fascism and the Working Class. Another historian that shares the same belief, as Mason is Adam Tooze. Tooze wrote an article to support his belief that Hitler intended the world war. The article is “Hitler’s Gamble”. On the opposite side of the debate we have Richard Overy, Overy believes that Hitler did not intend to start a world war when invading Poland in 1939. To supports himself Overy wrote The Origins of The Second World War. Another historian who shares the same belief that Hitler did not intend to start a world war when invading Poland is A.J.P. Taylor. Taylor wrote The Origins Of The Second World War. All these historians use sources to supports their ideas on this
