In the face of absence, people feel the need to create a presence of some nature, and for this reason, questions of memorialization have quickly ensued. With physical representations of memories, we are not only reminded of our social history, but provided a correlation between people of various time periods and today’s world. This way, we are assured that legacies and traditions of yesteryear continue to live on. While it’s important to focus on our future, it’s just as vital we place significance in recalling our past. If we want to preserve the memories of an influential figure in history, we must make our monuments as tough as those memorialized; for it is they who overcame oppression, recession, war, and endured all kinds of emotional heartbreak.
