The Sugar Act of 1764 placed a tax on sugar, molasses, and similar products imported to the American colonies from the British Empire. The colonies didn’t obey the Act due to the taxes being too high and lack of enforcement from the British government. Lack of enforcement of any rule makes people want to ignore it, colonists openly smuggled sugar and molasses avoiding the stiff tax and when the British finally decided to enforce the law colonist didn’t take them seriously. The Currency Act of 1764, Britain’s attempt to keep the colonist from printing their own money known as colonial scrip and forcing them to exchange it for British money, weakened the colonies economy substantially and to make things worse Britain only gave colonist one English note for every two colonial notes making the value of a colonial note less. War of Independence. Great Britain accepted the independence of the United States with western boundaries to the Mississippi River. America also had provisions in the treaty that called for the payment of U.S. private debts to British citizens. America fulfilled these debts through the use of Newfoundland fisheries. When summarizing the war scholars have pointed out that the British never constructed an overall general strategy to win the war and the early generals in charge didn’t use British forces of power to their full potential. The British also lost a lack of understanding and communication at critical points in the war. Americans ultimately took advantage of the British mistakes, and the supplies and funds allocated by the French were essential. America’s problems weren’t all solved after gaining independence. A strong central form of government was needed; The Articles of Confederation weren’t enough with no right to tax citizens and no executive branch in the Articles the government wasn’t very strong. This led to the drafting of The Constitution, which encompassed different checks and balances, and was ratified on June 21, 1788, the first American party system Federalist and Anti-Federalist were formed.
