As of September 2014, the agency’s annual budget was reported to be $6.9 billion. In terms of Congressional funding, the agency was allocated approximately $7 billion for all of its programs excluding mandatory programs (cite here). The agency has several programs that fall under the categories of global health, environmental health, and safety in the workplace. An example of one of the CDC’s major global health initiatives is the HIV/AIDS program. The program is responsible for implementing HIV testing and counseling programs in low-income countries as well as providing assistance in preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mothers to their children (cite here). This program additionally provides education on safe sex practices to reduce the risk of spreading HIV/AIDS between partners. An example of the agency’s environmental health program and policy initiative is the Promoting Clean Water for Health program. This program is responsible for developing policy related to safe drinking water, particularly in private wells. While the outbreak itself has died down, the CDC has been implementing several prevention programs to contain and prevent the outbreak from spreading across the world. As of October 9, 2015, the CDC has been working in conjunction with the World Health Organization to enhance screening strategies for people entering the United States who have been traveling to Ebola-infected countries such as Liberia.
