How have tight ends turned from just another lineman to point scoring machine? One they are bigger than most other plays so they can't be tackled easily, and two they are usually drafted for their catching skills, not their blocking skills. Tight Ends, almost all do some very amazing things, an example of a good tight end is Travis Kelce, who played in college, and the NFL.
The position of tight end has changed over time. “As a tight end, I had to learn to block and catch.”(Mccormack, 30) Tight ends have changed over the years.They used to be just hardcore blockers. Now tight ends are being drafted for speed and catching ability. Most teams use tight ends in the red zone since they draft them for catching and since they are such large targets they are very hard to stop. These are some reasons that the tight end position has become such an important position. One of the best tight ends in the NFL, Travis Kelce has had some amazing seasons in the NFL, but It's time to look back to how it all started in Cincinnati for Travis Kelce. Travis Kelce started his football career at Cleveland Heights High school. Where, after four years of high school, he was recruited to the University of Cincinnati to play football. His first year of the NFL was him learning skills needed to play in the NFL and he was only on the practice squad. He continued to be on the practice squad until 2014. In 2014 he had 862 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions. Then in 2015, he had 875 reception yards and again five touchdown receptions. In 2016 he had his first breakout year with 1125 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions. In 2017 Travis Kelce is looking to have another huge year with already 629 yards receiving and five touchdown
