Specific troubles James Town faced was the crew ate all the food they had on the ship therefore no food when they landed. When packing, they couldn’t pack food for the new world, only when they were on the ship. In the time that the mayflower arrived, it was winter and many got sick and died. The cold took over their bodies and hunger in addition to dehydration also took many lives. Thankfully the Natives noticed the struggle.…

Name of concept 1: Persuasian Description/definition of concept 1: The act of causing people to do something or believe something Discuss how you see this concept depicted in Jonestown: Jim Jones was very good at getting an audience to believe anything he says. He persuades the masses a couple of times. The first example would be when he persuades them into thinking that everyone is againt them. He tells the population that the United States and the Congressman that later arrives are in some aspects of evil.…
The Midwest, a place in the world where communities are closely aligned to one another. These small, rural communities rely on every person in order to create that community. It seems as though that knowing everyone around the small communities was what made a person successful in life. Additionally, these communities valued hard-work and honesty when it came with almost everything they did in their lives; whether it was working in the farmlands or spreading information throughout the communities about certain people to look out for, it was hard to be anonymous inside the city. Unfortunately, there are sometimes citizens that do not look forward to that kind of lifestyle.…
When attempting to understand the intricate political and social structures of a nation, it is of the utmost importance to begin the journey with an examination of its inhabitants. A country is defined by the actions of its people, who, for better or for worse, ultimately determine the long-term direction of the land no matter its form of government. The United States is no exception in this area. In fact, it can be said to be even more true of her as the people are given a previously unwitnessed level of control over her course. Tocqueville and Putnam both set out on the journey to understand the fabric of how America operates.…
Blessing Opara Reading Response 7: Concepts of Rural Communities The main ideas and core concepts explored in the reading “Community Institutions in Rural Society” primarily discusses the examination of rural communities in American society. Rural communities are often defined by their differentiation from the populous urban areas. Thus, rural communities are defined as small populations with a primary agricultural setting. These communities are often farm lands and dwell outside of cities where they consist of few businesses and people. Essentially rural areas reflect the ideas of gemeinschaft (otherwise known as community) where their culture is interdependent as opposed to the individualistic culture of the urban areas.…
This event can be greatly explained through a functionalist sociological perspective. Functionalist perspective “seeks to explain social organization and change in terms of the roles performed by different social structures, phenomena, and institutions”(Chambliss & Eglitis 17). In which a French scholar, Émile Durkheim believes that any deviance acts such as Jim Jones’s actions, “serves social function” and “labeling some acts as deviant” reminds “members of society what is “normal” or “moral” ”(Chambliss & Eglitis 18). With that being said, I will be using the functionalist theoretical perspective in order to display how the evolution and formation of Jonestown impacted society.…
“A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” That is the definition of the word community. The Outsiders, a novel by S.E. Hinton, was based on a setting of a divided community consisting of the Socs, the rich Westside kids, and the Greasers, the poorer Eastside kids, usually deemed for trouble. The problem: they can’t put their differences aside, and realize they are both human. They just can’t crack the code on equality.…
This is a complex, loaded question, but it is one that must be addressed if the church is to openly and honestly dialogue about the issues of race and about racial reconciliation. The two main contributing factors to the racialized nature of evangelicalism are slavery (and the aftermath thereof) and the disestablishment of religion. The first slave ship arrived on the shores of Jamestown, VA in 1619.…
Lois Lowry has created a community that on the surface shows peace and harmony. However, underneath this tranquility it’s clear that this has come at the price of freedom, diversity and conflict; elements that enable communities to progress, transform and evolve. Lowry’s community is a representation of our world where everything that makes it unique has been stripped away in the process of creating what is believed to be a utopia. In the community that Lois Lowry has created, freedom has been eliminated.…
James Gregory takes us on a journey from the past in “The Southern Diaspora.” He gives us insight on how black and white migrants transformed America. We get to see a close look on the migrants’ movements to the North and West and how well they accustomed to their new environment. Cultural and political institutions were being transformed immensely. Not to mention, popular culture like music.…
The term American, when used by one who considers themself to belong to this term, is perceived to portray a person containing the traits of strength, duty, and unity. It is thought that the individual characterized by this term should be proud to classified as one. This is the picture painted by media, that when “Uncle Sam” calls on the people of America, everyone would stand up and defend this beautiful, peaceful country till their last breath. The term American gives those classified as such a defined sense of community and of belonging to and relating to those within that community. However, the characteristics that make someone an American is as different as the people that are asked.…
According to Brooks, Americans aware, and understand that the U.S. consists of various races and beliefs, but they do not carefully consider, and believe the necessity of diversity. “What we are looking at here is human nature. People want to be around others who are roughly like themselves. That is called community”(Brooks 309). The author of this essay asserts this interesting phenomenon with human instinct.…
Members of the Peoples Temple felt neglected by the American government. Also, African Americans are hungry for sense of appraisal and an interracial community that the Peoples Temple offered was seen in good faith among black people and white people. The Peoples Temple emphasized on egalitarian meaning that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities. Jones was able to connect with his fellow members because he understood them and told them that if they gave back to the church they wouldn’t need anything else. As a result, many of them would sell their homes, belongings, and were left with nothing but if they needed food, shelter they were all provide to…
What is a community? According to the American Heritage dictionary a community is: A group of people living in the same locality and under the same government. I have lived in two distinct communities which are the African community and the United States Southern community. What I do admire most about them are hospitality, manners, sense of community, respect, and the desire for learning. However, I will love to improve on my African community the disregard for female education and in my American Southern community the fragments of racial discrimination and prejudice.…
