Establishing the economy
Before the fur trade with England, the First Nations people bartered to get what they needed. They traded food, furs, copper, pottery and other necessities with other First Nations people (p.77), over short and long distances. They mainly travel by canoe and by foot. This changed when the French came to new France and brought guns, gunpowder, hatchets, cloth, tobacco, knives and kettles.

The company is still around today because it was successful. The Hudsons bay company built forts along the Hudsons bay which were close to the fur supply and had good transportation both into the northern forests and to England.
Transportation
Europeans explored the entire continent, searching for more fur. They used boats and river routes like the rivers that flow into Hudson's Bay to transport their goods. This is one of the reasons why the Hudson's Bay Company built their forts along the Hudson's Bay.
Travelling into the interior of North America would have been impossible without the canoe. Birchbark canoes built by the Eastern First Nations were well suited for travelling on lakes and rivers. They are lightweight and durable. This meant they moved through the water quickly. People like my grandfather still build canoes today.
The French transportation route went through the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. The route went on land and in the water to get to Lake Winnipeg. This route took two years to transport goods. The English route took only
