History Of Physical Therapy

My history of experiencing physical therapy is the main reason I have chosen to go into the field and become a Physical Therapist. I went to physical therapy for several months after having knee surgery for a sports related injury and since then not a day has gone by where I don’t aspire to be a PT one day. I know what it is like to be the patient and go through therapy, which will help me relate to patients in the future when they have a difficult time. I strongly believe that being an athlete having gone through physical therapy will set me up for success in the future.
Likewise, being an athlete, I am around different injuries all the time in the athletic training room which exposes me to a lot. Even I have had a variety of injuries throughout

What is professionalism in the context of being a student in a doctor of physical therapy degree program? While being engrossed with the question, the definition of professionalism that I read in the APTA as defined by Stern DPT, I had an intuitive perception. I began to ponder that I could certainly apply that definition to where I am in my journey. Although I am not currently a student of a doctor of physical therapy program, my personal, educational, and volunteer experiences have already begun to prepare me for my role as a future student of a DPT program. I can still remember the first time I had a personal experience involving physical therapy.…

When I was younger, in late-elementary or early-middle school, my father dislocated his shoulder in a roller hockey game, and was consequently referred to physical therapy. This was my first time being introduced to the profession, and I can clearly remember the difference in his attitude and pain that resulted from his treatment. After seeing him in pain and barely be able to move his arm for days, the progress he had made just two weeks after starting therapy was amazing, and soon enough he could go back to playing hockey and horsing around with me and my brother. Until this point, my idea of healthcare was taking pills and getting shots, and the concept of physical therapy was completely foreign to me. As a child who played sports his entire life, the profession appealed greatly to me because it combined my love of sport and fitness with helping others, and improving the lives of people just like my dad.…

I realized the true potential that physical therapy after witnessing how beneficial it was for my mother after herniating multiple discs and suffering from sciatica. Over time, the didactic advice and exercise training that my mother received from her physical therapist gradually helped her get back on her feet. After observing a physical therapist treat various patients who were successfully able to recover from their physical infirmities through rehabilitation, I was fascinated by this field and started pursuing a career in physical therapy. Some of the classes I attended during college were provided to implement the students’ repertoire for working with patients of all ages, which is a steppingstone to the kinds of patients I might encounter as a physical therapist.…
