They came together and competed against each other in different sporting events battling it off for the first place honour. “The games bring us together and create peace and understanding among us” said the orator (speaker) Lysias in 388 BC The Greeks invented an athletic contest and held them in honour of their gods. There were many different Greek festivals such as The Isthmos games that were staged every two years at the Isthmos of Corinth. The Pythian Games which took place every four years near Delphi but the most famous festival was defiantly the Olympic Games.
After the 5 days of the Ancient Olympic Games there was eventually a man who was the winner at his event. As there were different events there were lots of winners. Winning the Olympic Games was a huge achievement and honour. Immediately after the athletes won their event the herald would announce the winners name, his father’s name and city of origin to the crowd. The athlete was given a palm branch and was decorated with red woollen ribbon around his head, arms and legs as a mark of victory.
