This reflects and implies that the social atmosphere during the war was cold and dense hence the citizens needed to get entertainment and escapism. The music in this era had a very simple melody and some were very patriotic which reflects the political atmosphere at the time which was during WW1 and patriotic music gained a lot of popularity amongst people. An excellent example is “God Bless America” by Irving Berlin who was one of the most famous composers at the time and the patriotic music he created was very popular amongst people. In the 1930’s, the Great Depression heavily impacted the economy of America, including the Musicals. There were approximately 5,000 actors and 20,000 more theater workers looking for work which shows how the Broadway musical started to decline in terms of popularity. Not only did the Great Depression impact the theatre workers and artists, but it also impacted the audiences who wants entertainment. The Great Depression impacted people because they couldn’t afford to buy ticket hence there was a reduction in ticket sales and even though the Broadway musicals became less popular, Show-boat like shows were still pretty popular amongst people who could afford the ticket price which reflects how desperate people wanted entertainment at the time since they spent the money to watch the musicals despite the difficult situation most of the people were
