History Of Halloween Essay

Halloween was not always what it is in the world today. It originated from the Pagan religion, and it is now a holiday where kids dress up and go trick-or-treating. The past and the present are quite different in how people celebrate this holiday and what it means to them. This holiday was once strictly a religious holiday for the Celts, however in today’s world it has drastically changed the meaning of the holiday and made it into a holiday where it consists of making money, dressing up and partying and no longer has the real meaning of Halloween. \ Halloween is celebrated on October 31st but many do not know what Halloween is truly about. There are many differences between Halloween now and how it was in the past. Halloween is originally from the Pagan belief of the Celts about 2,000 years ago (Smith 6). Halloween was originally called All Hallows’ Eve (Feldman 2). Most of the traditions have been lost and replaced with new traditions. Halloween is now just a way to make money and have a little fun. There are a few similarities as to how we celebrate Halloween now and how the Pagan’s used to celebrate it. Although traditions have been lost with the ‘new and improved’ holiday, it does not represent anything truly meaningful. There is some gain to this because children and adults get to dress up and have some fun, but they should not replace a meaningful holiday with a day to party. Halloween costumes were originated from the way the Celts scared off spirits, and jack o’ lanterns were used for a lighting source not as a decoration. Halloween was not always about trick-or-treating or dressing up, it had a meaning and people took that away, people should learn the real reason behind this holiday; not the version people see
