The Dehumanization Of Genocide In Rwanda

Rwanda was a country divided between 1990 through 1995, for genocide was prepared and committed here in this small African country. It all started when in 1990, Belgium gave up control of the now diamond-less country, the only reason Belgium kept hold of this otherwise useless country. People were classified into 3 groups, 85% Hutu, 14% Tutsi, and then 1% Twa
(http://www.unitedhumanrights.org/genocide/genocide_in_rwanda.htm). Hutus were the lowest class and watched as the Tutsis got all the praise and good lives. Since the Tutsis looked more like Europeans than the Hutus, the Belgians treated them so much better than the Hutus. When Belgium left, the line between social classes blurred and in order to classify people, the Hutus used eye

They spread hate everywhere, from newspaper to radio and anything else to spread messages around quickly. Hutus called the Tutsis cockroaches and subhuman. Hutus committed crimes and blamed the Tutsis. Crushing their spirits in any way possible, including the denial to nicer lives like they just lived, since it was a Hutu that was president at the time. Even sexual assault was used often to dehumanize the Tutsis. (https://modernhistoryproject2012.wordpress.com/the-steps-to-genocidethis-thisi/)
They used radio commercials to get children on their side, saying good kids from Interahamwe, little groups that go out and kill Tutsis with machetes. In a sense, the genocide started in 1993 when these events happened since the Hutus just killed random Tutsis. But being too unorganized, it couldn’t be counted as one just yet. To make the population oblivious to the Hutus plans, they said that the we are going to “squash the cockroaches”. A seemingly innocent action that was simply the start to something much, much

All the propaganda spread word that, Hutus are better than Tutsis, and by such a margin the Tutsis shouldn’t live. Intermarriage between the Hutus and Tutsis was, of course, made illegal and radio stations always teased the Tutsis religion. Moderate Hutu prime minister, Agathe Uwilingiyimana and her servants were killed. Also, the excuse and spark of this genocide was the death of their president in a plane crash, president Habyarimana, was blamed on the Tutsis. Even though the Hutus were the ones that forced the plane crash, everyone was suddenly mad at the Tutsis, average people now armed with bloodlust and desire for their wiping from existence. Now, the preparations for death

They were more afraid of authorities than they were to kill. For example, Ignace, one of the men interviewed in the book, had always felt hatred toward the Tutsis and jumped at the idea of killing them, while Pancrace, another perpetrator, said that he had to obey the orders from the authorities. But, what motivated these men to commit these acts against humanity in the first place? There was a revolution in 1959 where the Hutus overthrew the Tutsis, which caused the Tutsis to become known as parasites instead of the elite.…

Graphic Novel Essay One of the darkest time in Rwandan history was the massacre of Tutsi and moderate Hutu; It lasted a hundred days and an estimated one million Rwandans were killed. The genocide was planned by a group of Hutu extremist known as the Akazu, and the killings were carried out by the government supported militias like the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi. Even though innocent civilians were being slaughtered because of their ethnicity, the United Nations choose not to intervene due to disastrous results of the operation in Somalia. A quick search online would tell one similar facts I have written previously, however; a majority of sites do not have personal experiences from people who survived the genocide.…

Before any of this mess started, the Hutu people and the Tutsi people lived harmonically with each other. It was not until the Belgium’s arrived to colonize Rwanda that everything went to chaos. The Belgium put the Tutsi on a higher level than the Hutu, which ended up with the Hutus being treated like dirt. It was not much later that Belgium suddenly switched the power between the two and gave the Hutus the higher level power. The Hutus were not going to let that opportunity to get revenge slip.…

Genocide has eight different stages as defined by Gregory Stanton, the president of Genocide Watch. These stages are used to identify, predict, prevent and stop genocides. The stages, in order, are classification, symbolization, dehumanization, organization, polarization, identification, extermination and denial. Rwanda has seen its share of turmoil and genocide due to social classification by the Belgians as they were separated into Hutu and Tutsi, which is a classification based on the size of facial features and the color of their skin. These classifications are arbitrary but it has still caused unrest in violence in Rwanda.…

However, that all happened because of European colonization in Africa. Doc 1, by Gerard Prunier, states how the Belgians divided Rwanda people based on physical features.…

This ideology was taught to all members of Hutu ethnic group and also widely spread. Even with the discrimination, the Tutsis continued to be civil and maintained high spirits while executing their duties. The Hutu, on the other hand, saw themselves as superior and mistreated the minority Tutsi as they knew their actions would go unquestioned and unpunished by the authorities. The disciplinary authorities were made of Hutu people hence they did not punish the criminals of Hutu ethnicity as they would be considered traitors. Additionally, for the moderate Hutu people, they were also attacked and executed together with the Tutsis during the genocide as they were also viewed as enemies of the nation.…

The Rwandans themselves didn’t want peace, making it extremely difficult for the international community to effectively intervene. The genocide was unavoidable from the moment civil war broke out between the Hutus and the Tutsis. Where the Hutu government and the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF or else known as the ‘rebels’) represented both opposing sides. Augustin Bizimungu, the supreme commander of the Hutu army and Robert Kajuga and Georges Rutanganda, leaders of the Interahamwae, led the militia on a killing spree. Between the dates of April 6 and July 1994, nearly one million citizens of Rwanda’s seven million population were massacred in an effort to exterminate Rwanda’s Tutsi population (Klinghoffer 3). Neighbors killed neighbors. Torture, rape, looting, and exile ensued. People who had been living together for decades, sharing the same language, culture, and religion became enemies. The violence was genocide-- a deliberate, systematic annihilation of Rwanda’s racially-defined Tutsi group (Straus 1).…
