My immediate family has a history of cheerleading. My father was a cheerleader at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco back when it was an all-boys school. My mom was a part of the Edwardsburg cheer squad in Michigan. I was not aware of my cheer lineage until after I joined the Drake High School Cheer Team.
The history of cheerleading is strongly bound to the history of athletics in the United States. This includes American Football, basketball, etc.
At the first American Football university game, held in 1869 between Princeton University and Rutgers University in New Jersey, set the stage for cheerleading to begin.
