Australian Football also known as Aussie Rules, AFL or footy has been around since the 1850s and is now one of the most popular sports in Australia. Although Australian Football was developed in Australia, it is now played by more than 100,000 people in over 80 countries. In 1858 the first game of Australian Football was played. The idea for the game came from a Victorian man called Thomas Wills. There is a statue next to the MCG in remembrance of the first match Melbourne Grammar Vs Scotch College. The VFL was established in 1896, the following year the League’s first games were played among the first clubs Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne.
